Happy 4th of July...from Edgartown

Edgartown is my favorite town on Martha's Vineyard-and one of my favorite towns in the world as well. Street after street of beautiful homes, white fences and the largest hydrangeas you've ever seen. It's like something out of Martha Stewart Living. But I digress...Edgartown is also known for the largest 4th of July party on the island.
We were looking forward to a quintessential New England 4th of July and today's celebration did not disappoint. There was a huge barbecue (by New England standards of BBQ-burgers and hot dogs-not what we'd call a BBQ in the South!) and the most perfect parade. Music and floats and fire trucks and candy-even Ray Allen from the Boston Celtics (who had just won the NBA Championship) was there holding the trophy! Springer and Carver quickly made friends with our parade neighbors and literally danced in the street waiting for the parade to start (which was a while being that we had unknowingly landed where the parade ended!)

Once the parade wrapped up we still had 2 long hours to kill before the fireworks began. Two hours with an almost 3 year old who didn't nap today. Two hours with two children who had now decided they were very hungry-and who needed to pee-often! So we walked, and walked and walked some more. This lighthouse (one of the 5 on the Vineyard) was one of our stops.

Vineyard Vines was another stop-and what a blessing that was-there they had coloring sheets and crayons outside the store. We landed there for a while as Carver took a turn designing quite a nice madras tie for next year's collection. Springer, on the other hand, ran around chasing a cat, singing, waving her flag and just generally being a 3 year old without a nap out way past bedtime...you get the picture.

Finally to the Harbor for the fireworks to begin. Carver loved them-and said several times "I will remember this night for the rest of my life!" He must have thanked us for bringing them there half a dozen times-he really enjoyed the celebration. By this point (about 9:30) sweet Springer was fried. She liked the lights, but they went on a bit too long for her "I should have been in bed three hours ago" attention span! Although when the fireworks began Springer broke out into her own 4th of July rendition of the Doxology. We couldn't help but smile at the sound of her little voice singing "Pwaise God fwom whom all bwessings fwo..." as the lights lit up the sky!

So, we were all tired on the way home, but it was a great way to spend the 4th-not one that will soon, if ever, be forgotten.
Happy fourth of July!
